Walter McMillian’s ordeal is more or less accurately portrayed in Just Mercy: He was arrested in 1987 and charged with the murder of Ronda Morrison, an 18-year-old white woman who was shot in broad daylight at the Monroeville, Alabama dry-cleaning shop where she worked. ![]() The murder remains unsolved to this day, and the people who ruined McMillian’s life prospered in the aftermath. Just Mercy is structured like a standard legal thriller-secrets uncovered, wrongs righted, justice done, and so on-with one exception, which is that no one is punished in the end.
